External Wall Insulation

 

A solid wall consists of just one wall construct, usually using two bricks that interlock at around a thickness of 9 inches thick, allowing heat and moisture to travel through the brickwork.

 

Unlike cavity walls that have the additional layer of single skin brickwork to prevent heat loss and protect the inner walls from driven winds and the hard-hitting rain, this makes the solid wall construct more vulnerable to both leaking heat and a cause for water penetration, which usually causes ongoing damp/mould issues.

 

The external wall insulation method of installation usually takes five days to complete. It involves using EWI  insulated boards (70mm – 100mm) to the external walls using the dot and dab method and then the application of mesh and a special type of rendering to apply a finish, which can range from smooth, textured, painted or using pebble-dash.
